Koningsdag in het Vondelpark

Het is een gezellig feest vandaag in het Vondelpark. Waarschijnlijk zijn de scènes overal in Nederland hetzelfde vandaag, maar hier een paar kiekjes. 

De hoedjes.

De geboorte van het genre Koningslied...

Vanochtend las ik dat het oorspronkelijke koningslied toch gaat worden gebruikt.

Grappig genoeg zijn er inmiddels behoorlijk wat mensen zoals ik geïnspireerd geraakt om hun eigen koningslied te schrijven, zodat we inmiddels te maken hebben met het 'genre koningslied'. Ik heb de mijne dan ook maar omgedoopt tot 'Een Koningslied'. 

Ik hoop nog steeds dat het iemand lukt er een melodie op te componeren...

Een tekst voor het Koningslied, poging twee

Aangezien de eerste tekst van het koningslied op veel kritiek stuitte heb ik een voorstel voor een nieuwe tekst. Mijn doelstelling is om een tekst met meer inhoud te schrijven, zowel qua vorm als qua onderwerp. 

Wat betreft de vorm is dit gedicht een  'Ballade Royale', wat me een passende versvorm leek voor deze gelegenheid. Deze versvorm heeft als rijmschema 4x ababbcC, waarbij de hoofdletter C staat voor een integraal herhaalde regel (met eventueel minimale variaties). Het metrum is over het algemeen vijf jamben, ik heb de vrijheid genomen daar vier jamben van te maken.

Wat inhoud betreft bestaat het gedicht uit vier strofen. Het eerste is een verwelkoming, het tweede een reflectie op het ludieke aspect van koning Willem Alexander als persoon, het derde een reflectie op zijn rol in onze maatschappij, en het vierde een afsluitende aanmoediging. Alle vier de strofes eindigen met een referentie naar het geloof dat ons koningshuis kenmerkt.

Ik hoop hiermee te hebben beantwoord aan de roep van de Nederlanders over een meer inhoudelijk lied. Het moet nog op muziek gezet worden, ik hoop dat een componist hier inspiratie uit kan putten.

Een Koningslied

                                                                                                voor koning Willem Alexander

Wees welkom, koning van ons land,
Dat zingen wij nu met elkaar,
Dat zing ik bij mijn vol verstand,
Dat zing ik, ja, mijn wens is waar,
En is daarna het zingen klaar,
Dan vraag ik God zijn rijkste zegen,
Dat Hij u bij sta op uw wegen.

De glimlachkoning bent u, want,
Heeft u een kans, een halve maar,
Dan toont u uw ludieke kant,
Volledig in het openbaar.
Het heeft een kwetsbaarheidsgevaar,
Maar toont de mens, om hulp verlegen;
Dat Hij u bij sta op uw wegen.

Toch heeft u plichten aan uw stand,
U heeft een functie, echt en zwaar:
U geeft de eenheid, het verband,
Want eer, geweten, is niet raar,
Wanneer u zegt: denkt aan elkaar.
Zo kan uw voorbeeld ons bewegen.
Dat Hij u bij sta op uw wegen.

Dus is er crisis, is er brand,
Raak sympathiek de juiste snaar,
Licht met principes niet de hand,
En blijf steeds in Gods liefde daar

Vertrouw dan steeds in voor en tegen,
Dat Hij u bijstaat op uw wegen.

Finding your Voice in the Knowledge Worker Age

Another book I have been reading recently is the 8th Habit by Stephen Covey.

Although it may sound a bit cheap to first write a book about the 7 habits of highly effective people, and then go on to write a book about the 8th habit, I think his subtitle (from effectiveness to greatness) makes sense. 

The key of this book is finding your 'Voice' and helping people to find theirs.

A Vocation to Write - Flannery O'Connor

I have recently read a book by the American writer Flannery O'Connor, titled Mystery and Manners: Occasional Prose. It was recommended to me by Father John Wauck from the PUSC, when I told him I was interested in learning a bit more about writing fiction.

Flannery O'Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia, in 1925. She died young, at the age of 39. She had a very peculiar fictional vocation - she writes about human misfits, who through an unfortunate (often violent) turn of events run up against the limits of human vision. She was a lady of profound faith, and she especially writes about her Southern country where the (often protestant) faith is very much a part of daily life. From a friend of mine who is a Southener I have understood that many of the things she writes about are very funny, because they are so recognizable. For a foreigner, this element of her work is somewhat harder to grasp, unfortunately.

Still, for someone interested in fiction writing this book is quite worthwhile. O'Conner has taught me the importance of concrete particulars in fiction. She also writes interesting things about the vocation of the writer, like the following passage.

"(…) it is the peculiar burden of the fiction writer that he has to make one country do for all and that he has to evoke that one country through the concrete particulars of a life that he can make believable.

            This is first of all a matter of vocation, and a vocation is a limiting factor which extends even to the kind of material that the writer is able to apprehend imaginatively. The writer can choose what he writes about but he cannot choose what he is able to make live, and so far as he is concerned, a living deformed character is acceptable and a dead whole one is not. The Christian writer particularly will feel that whatever his initial gift is, it comes from God; and no matter how minor a gift it is, he will not be willing to destroy it by trying to use it outside its proper limits."

So if you are interesting in fiction writing, Flannery O'Connor's Mystery and Manners is a read worth while.

Het Nieuwe Rijks - een eerste indruk

Vlakbij het museumplein wonen heeft zo zijn voordelen. Zaterdag ben ik om 6 uur in de rij gaan staan voor het rijksmuseum, binnen een half uur waren we binnen. Ik vond het prachtig.

Ik heb wat fototjes geschoten met mijn zeer oude palm, die geven hieronder een indruk. Het is zeer de moeite waard, Kuijpers komt helemaal tot zijn recht.

Poor and detached - not addicted

I have just started to read a book called Addiction and Grace: Love and Spirituality in the Healing of Addictions by Gerald G. May. Although I am in the second chapter, it makes a good impression. I am reading it mainly because I am thinking about writing something about Cardiovascular Disease, Life Style Change, virtue ethics, and spirituality. This is one of the most similar books I have found.

One nice passage that I found was the following (p14):

"Detachment is the word used in spiritual traditions to describe freedom of desire. Not freedom from desire, but freedom of desire. Of all the concepts we will be discussing, detachment is the most widely misunderstood. For centuries, people have distorted its meaning, mistakenly assuming that detachment devalues desire and denies the potential goodness of the things and people to which one can become attached. Thus detachment has come to be associated with coldness, austerity, and lack of passion. This is simply not true. An authentic spiritual understanding of detachment devalues neither desire nor the objects of desire. Instead it 'aims at correcting one's own anxious grasping in order to free oneself for committed relationship to God.' (Ref: Wakefield, The Westminster Dictionary of Christian Spirituality, 1983, p111) According to Meister Eckhard, detachment "enkindles the heart, awakens the spirit, stimulates our longings, and shows us where God is…' "

In this passage I recognize the spirit of poverty that people try to live in Opus Dei - loving the world, but always aimed at God first. 

Begrafenis van Meneer Steinkamp

Afgelopen vrijdag was de begrafenis van Meneer Steinkamp, de priester die het Opus Dei in Nederland is begonnen.

Persoonlijk heb ik veel aan hem te danken, hij heeft me op meerdere gelegenheden met goede raad (en zijn altijd goede humeur) bijgestaan. 

Op de website van het Opus Dei staat een mooi stukje. (http://www.opusdei.nl/art.php?p=52941) De foto vind ik ook erg goed gelukt. Dat was typisch de uitdrukking van meneer Steinkamp voordat hij één of andere geestige opmerking ging maken. 

We vertrouwen erop er een voorspreker in de hemel bij te hebben. Meneer Steinkamp, bedankt voor alles!

Wat is de macht van de Paus?

De afgelopen tijd rondom de Pauskeuze is er nogal wat te doen geweest rondom de vermeende 'machtsstrijd' in het Vaticaan. Dat doet de vraag rijzen: wat is de macht van de Paus eigenlijk? In zijn preek van de inauguratiemis geeft Paus Franciscus daarop het volgende antwoord.

Today, together with the feast of Saint Joseph, we are celebrating the beginning of the ministry of the new Bishop of Rome, the Successor of Peter, which also involves a certain power. Certainly, Jesus Christ conferred power upon Peter, but what sort of power was it? Jesus' three questions to Peter about love are followed by three commands: feed my lambs, feed my sheep. Let us never forget that authentic power is service, and that the Pope too, when exercising power, must enter ever more fully into that service which has its radiant culmination on the Cross. He must be inspired by the lowly, concrete and faithful service which marked Saint Joseph and, like him, he must open his arms to protect all of God's people and embrace with tender affection the whole of humanity, especially the poorest, the weakest, the least important, those whom Matthew lists in the final judgment on love: the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick and those in prison (cf.Mt 25:31-46). Only those who serve with love are able to protect!

Waarom heet de Paus Franciscus?

In een audientie met mensen uit de media legt Paus Franciscus zijn naam uit.

Some people wanted to know why the Bishop of Rome wished to be called Francis. Some thought of Francis Xavier, Francis De Sales, and also Francis of Assisi. I will tell you the story. During the election, I was seated next to the Archbishop Emeritus of São Paolo and Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Clergy, Cardinal Claudio Hummes: a good friend, a good friend! When things were looking dangerous, he encouraged me. And when the votes reached two thirds, there was the usual applause, because the Pope had been elected. And he gave me a hug and a kiss, and said: "Don't forget the poor!" And those words came to me: the poor, the poor. Then, right away, thinking of the poor, I thought of Francis of Assisi. Then I thought of all the wars, as the votes were still being counted, till the end. Francis is also the man of peace. That is how the name came into my heart: Francis of Assisi. For me, he is the man of poverty, the man of peace, the man who loves and protects creation; these days we do not have a very good relationship with creation, do we? De eerste homilie van Paus Fanciscus

Paus Franciscus heeft zijn eerste homilie uitgesproken in de Mis 'voor de Kerk' in de Sixtijnse kapel met de kardinalen na zijn uitverkiezing. 

Zijn boodschap: we moeten op tocht gaan, bouwen en belijden, met het kruis op onze schouders.

Crowdfunding kan ook kunstzinnig, educatief en solidair!

Mijn goede voornemen voor het nieuwe jaar is: een solidaire actie ondernemen, en ook anderen helpen solidair te zijn. 

Zo kwam ik op een 'crowdfunding drive' voor Harambee, een stichting die onderwijs en ontwikkelingsprojecten in Afrika steunt. Hun filosofie is Afrikanen helpen zichzelf te helpen, en dat lukt hun heel goed.

Het concept is vrij simpel. Ik heb een gedicht geschreven voor mijn statistiek studenten en dat gepubliceerd als ebook. Dat ebook kun je online kopen (zie hier), en de auteursopbrengsten (ongeveer 85%) gaan direct naar Harambee. Je bepaalt zelf hoeveel je betaalt voor het boek, ik heb een adviesprijs van $2.99 vastgesteld. Marionetten theater

Gisteren heb ik een heel inspirerend en gezellig bezoek gebracht aan een gezin dat het Nederlands Marionettentheater runt. Er gaat heel wat tijd en moeite in zitten om daar echt iets moois van te maken. 

Mocht je eens een zaterdag of zondagmiddag in Amsterdam zijn (met je kinderen) dan is het zeker een goede tip. Ze spelen ook op locatie (partijtjes, etc.)
